Adam Caldwell
Based in the bay area of California, Caldwell is a painter immersed in many of the social issues of contemporary society. From the shapeshifting nature of communities due to displacement and growing wealth inequality (for which San Francisco and Oakland are becoming renowned) to the free speech front line of UC Berkeley, on through the ever expanding web of the tech giants. It is safe to say that in his day-to-day life Caldwell is drawn face to face with the contradictions and complications of contemporary America.
In this most recent series of oil paintings Caldwell is exploring the similarities in aesthetic, and disparity of perspective, between the visual language of both totalitarian regimes and the consumer culture of comic books. Here we can see juxtaposed the simultaneously distinct and overlapping expressions of repressive conformity and unbridled hyper-capitalism. In both worlds identity is paramount, what is different is the ideological approach to this concept.
