About the Woe be Gone series:
Ironically, unexpectedly, and (in retrospect) thankfully, the pandemic allowed for a deepening awareness of the natural world around us. Alongside the traumas, losses, and isolations, we’ve also learned to slow down, savour, and appreciate what our immediate surroundings have to offer. Despite our current hyper-connectivity, infinite online distractions, and constant streams of communication, I observed a hunger for a different kind of connection: one with nature and the balances around us.
Beside this hunger comes the grief of living in a crushingly beautiful world as it’s being swept away. Some of these pieces explore that crux. And some of this longing is spelled out with tears, which harbour a language that is universal.
I became fixated with weather, the way it invoked my moods and turned me toward it. Over time I felt its hold strengthening. Too much rain in one place, too much smoke in another. While in the past it seemed an everyday undercurrent, it’s become something I can’t look away from. These works embody this new voice that I can’t un-hear.
Turmoil, so to speak, has always had a place in the atmosphere of my work. Recently, this turmoil has reached a new pitch for me and for others, and I have discovered that a pivotal importance in my work is leaning into difficult truths instead of shying away. Woe Be Gone is a prayer, not a promise; a longing, not a lull.
