WATER – searching for origin
Plato assigned the Icosahedron to represent the element of water. Throughout ancient civilizations we see evidence of countless myths about creation in which life emerges from primordial waters. Water has a universal undertone of purity and symbolically, it is often viewed as the source of life itself. This painting was informed by several tide-pooling, scuba
diving and surfing adventures I’ve had along the west coast.
To begin, I built the Icosehodron to resemble scaffolding biologists build to farm new corals. Within the PNW ecosystem I featured the Two spotted Octopus, known for being a docile dedicated mother, protecting her eggs which hang suspended from the interior of the rocky structure. To escape the probing fingers of the octopus multiple easter-egg colored endemic Spiny Pacific Lumpsuckers (Eumicrotremus orbis), defying logic with their comically poor swimming skills, escape the confines of their aquatic home. They use their specialized pelvic shaped discs to function like suction cups and stick to the exterior underside. On the structure I added some corals that grow along the reefs on the PNW.
Water, a dynamic shape shifter, mysteriously pours into view, filling the Icosahedron vessel full of aqua water. The water then freezes momentarily to form into aqua ice, swollen and dripping off to the bottom of the painting out of view.
Most of us seek an origin throughout our lives, a place to come from, and a search to understand where we are going. To adapt to the constantly changing world, as temporary vessels of flesh and feelings, we have to invent new ways to define reality in order to navigate our surroundings.
